Hussmann’s New Isla Case Increases Sales of Prepared Foods by 50% at Sobeys

Sobeys supermarket in Coldlake, Alberta (Western Canada) recently purchased its first Isla case, and the store owner couldn’t be more pleased with the results!  The Isla island merchandiser was installed near the deli department, displaying ready-to-eat meals, packaged salads and cut fruit. 

 

 

“We love the shop-around accessibility of Isla,” said store owner Scott Squire.   Although he knew Isla would attract attention, the tremendous boost in sales took him by surprise.

 

“We’ve seen over a 50% increase in sales of sushi, cut fruit and packaged salads,” Scott Squire said.  “The huge turnover in these products was more than we’ve ever experienced before.”

Isla merchandisers are exceeding expectations at Sobeys and at other supermarkets throughout North America.  Over 100 units have been installed to date, and the proven flexibility and shop-around appeal of the case make it a top choice for any new store or remodel project.

By combining our engineering capabilities with the Hussmann and Trane portfolio of products, we recently helped Sprouts Farmers Markets reduce carbon footprint and energy consumption, leading to recognition from the U.S. EPA GreenChill organization.  The GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce their emissions of ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas refrigerants.    

Sprouts, which owns stores in California, Arizona, Colorado and Texas, recently received a New Partner Award from GreenChill.  New partners pledge to go above and beyond regulatory requirements by measuring and tracking refrigerant emissions that affect climate change and the earth’s ozone layer, and then they set reduction targets for these emissions.  Partners also agree to use only ozone-friendly alternatives in all new and remodeled stores.

“Sprouts Farmers Market is proving to consumers that they care about the earth’s ozone layer and climate system,” said Keilly Witman, GreenChill program manager. 

Hussmann’s Value Development Team first approached Sprouts with a complete refrigeration and HVAC solution following Ingersoll Rand’s acquisition of Trane.  The Hussmann team coordinated with Trane Commercial Systems’ engineering team to perform energy studies and analyses.  The energy studies found that with Hussmann’s Protocol, Krack’s microchannel condenser and Trane’s packaged air conditioning systems, we could deliver significant energy and carbon footprint reduction.  Since then, Sprouts has awarded Hussmann and Trane with 10 store projects.

“Sprouts was clearly impressed by our value proposition, as well as the attention given from all levels of our company,” said Mitch Pearson, Hussmann sales principal on the account.

“The solution developed for Sprouts demonstrated the team’s commitment to sustainability and being good environmental stewards,” said Mark Baumgardner, Hussmann’s Value Development Team leader.

ProtocolAs supermarkets strive to be more environmentally friendly and save energy through green technologies, Hussmann’s green products and services play a more important role.  Recently, Hussmann helped two supermarkets achieve LEED certification, the US Green Building Council’s benchmark in the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and the certification process gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance.  LEED recognizes performance in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Briarpatch Co-op Natural Foods Community Market in Grass Valley, CA, used Hussmann’s green products in a number of areas to help it achieve LEED certification through better energy efficiency.  The store’s refrigeration system consists of Protocol units piped to an evaporative condenser.  Hussmann also provided and installed the HVAC system, which passes through the Protocols for air conditioning and heat reclaim. Water heat reclaim was also utilized at this store, along with Innovator doors on reach-ins and high-efficiency coils and fan motors on refrigerated cases.

LED LightingHussmann truly went above and beyond in helping an ACME (SuperValu) supermarket improve efficiency and achieve LEED certification in Concordville, PA.  In addition to a Protocol refrigeration system, Innovator doors and LED lights on reach-ins and walk-in coolers, and energy efficient fan motors and coils in display cases, we customized D5XLEP dairy cases with the first installation of canopy LED lights and dimmable motion sensors.  (LED lights on medium temp multi-deck case canopies and dimmable motion sensors will be available late third quarter 2008.)

Hussmann introduced several key Specialty models to expand our successful Q-Series family lineup. The multi-deck Q3 now has a matching self-service case, Q3-SS (photo at left), which provides large capacity and flexibility for deli merchandising. Hussmann Launches New LED Lights for Medium Temp Multi-Deck Cases & Narrow Reach-Ins

Hussmann is leading the market with the introduction of a new generation of Always*Bright LED lights for shelves of multi-deck medium temperature display cases and for narrow footprint (RLN) Reach-Ins with Innovator Doors.

Both LED light systems were officially launched during the FMI Show in Las Vegas May 5-7 and generated tremendous customer interest.

The new LED light systems provide bright, even illumination of products with lower energy costs.  Retailers can save up to 51% in light-related energy by using the Always*Bright LED system over T-8 fluorescent lights.

Hussmann is among the first in the industry to offer an LED lighting system for medium temperature multi-deck display cases.  Due to the slim design of the LED light fixture, the light source is concealed under a tilted shelf.  Always*Bright LED shelf lights are available in 3’ and 4’ lengths in the following color temperatures: 2900K, 3500K and 4100K.

LED Reach-InThe new LED system for narrow footprint Reach-Ins with Innovator I and Innovator II doors has been optimized specifically for narrow Reach-Ins to provide superior product illumination versus traditional T-8 fluorescents, as well as against competitive LED systems. The new LED lighting system for narrow Reach-Ins with Innovator doors is available in two color temperatures: 3500K and 4100K. The LED system for narrow Reach-Ins joins the current LED system for standard (RL) Reach-In cases launched in 2007. Whether you have standard (RL) or narrow footprint (RLN) Reach-In cases, Hussmann has designed a LED lighting system specifically for your merchandising requirements. 

The new Always*Bright LED lights also work well for dimming or on/off operation using an occupancy sensor. They can be turned on and off in a cold environment with no warm-up time and no negative impact on lamp life.

Hussmann Always*Bright LED fixtures offer superior durability and extended lamp life (5-10 years), reducing the labor costs associated with replacing lamps. They are also backed by a four-year materials warranty on the LED light strips and a five-year materials warranty on the power supply.

Reach-In DoorsHussmann has released a new Door Anti-Sweat Heater (DASH) control for Innovator Door frames on Walk-In Coolers. This control conserves energy by reducing power consumption of the door glass anti-condensate heaters.

Most anti-sweat heaters in doors operate 100% of the time, regardless of conditions. The DASH control adjusts the heat needed according to store ambient conditions, making sure doors remain fog free while conserving energy.

The DASH sensor, installed in the bottom of the door frame assembly, ensures optimal energy savings by turning the heat on only when needed and turning it off when not needed. And unlike doors with unsightly externally mounted sensors, the DASH control is integrated into the frame.

DASH ComponentsAll three DASH components – the control module, the sensor and interconnecting cable – are factory-installed in the frame assembly.  The exact location and position of the sensor required for optimal performance is set at the factory.  No additional field installation is necessary.

A reference table (click here) shows the percent of time the door heater will be on based on the relative humidity and store temperature.  For a standard 75-degree/55% store, the door heat will be on 91% of the time (compared to 100% without the control).  In addition to the energy savings from DASH, customers may receive rebates from local utility companies for using anti-sweat heater controls.  Plus there is a five-year warranty on the control.

The patent-pending DASH control can now be ordered with Walk-In Cooler frames for 30” Innovator Door applications. The following kits are available:

Independent Study Shows Hussmann LED Lights With Sensors Reduce Energy By 68%

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) recently conducted testing of Hussmann’s Always*Bright LED lighting system on Reach-in freezer cases.  The system also included motion sensors and dimming power supplies designed to save energy by automatically dimming the lights when no one is near the freezer cases.  In addition to monitoring energy savings, the SMUD team tracked sales data and interviewed over 100 shoppers to get their opinions.  Study results showed the LED lighting/sensor system:

  • Reduced lighting energy consumption by an impressive 68% (compared to T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts
  • Reduced the low temperature refrigeration system energy consumption by 20%
  • Was acceptable to the majority of surveyed shoppers

Hussmann’s Always*Bright LED lights can be installed on new Reach-in cases and retrofitted on older cases.

Hussmann Green Program Reduces Emissions by 86 Million Pounds of CO2

Inspiring Green SolutionsHussmann Corporation has announced the early results of the company’s Green program.  In addition to benefiting the environment, Hussmann’s Green initiative helps customers reduce their operating costs by providing more energy- and refrigerant-efficient products and services.

Since the beginning of 2008, supermarkets purchasing Hussmann Green products have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 86 million pounds of CO2 and removed the equivalent of 8,196 cars from the road.

Over the past several years, Hussmann has launched a number of energy- and refrigerant-saving products and is currently working to develop several next generation Green products to meet customer needs.  Hussmann Green products include Protocol refrigeration systems, Innovator II doors, Always*Bright LED lights, night curtains, Always*Clear glass coating, energy-efficient fan motors and coils, microchannel condensers and others.

Hussmann’s Green commitment includes membership in the US EPA GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership.  GreenChill is a cooperative alliance with the supermarket industry to promote advanced technologies, strategies, and practices that reduce refrigerant charges and emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases.

Impact Excel Now Has the Flexibility of Two Exterior Designs: Streamline and Contour

Hussmann is now offering its popular Impact Excel refrigerated display case line with two exterior design options. This makes Excel more flexible than ever, with options of either streamline or contour exterior styling on all medium temperature, multi-deck models. Both designs are built on the same Excel platform, so customers get all Excel performance and energy saving benefits, regardless of style.


P4XThe “original” Excel streamline style features straight lines in both canopy and front panel, creating a clean, modern look. The interchangeable canopy surface allows the use of lighted canopy signs, a unique Excel merchandising feature available only with streamline styling. Excel streamline styling is also available on all low temperature models.

 

 

 

 


Contour 1The new Impact Excel contour styling features a curved canopy and multi-faceted front panel to create a contoured look in both areas. Available on all medium temperature, multi-deck models, Excel Contour provides a smooth, rounded style with a softer, more organic feel.

 

 

 


Contour 2

To further the design flexibility of Excel, customers can mix and match streamline and contour style options to customize cases and achieve the designs they prefer. For example, streamline canopies with lighted canopy signs can be matched with contour front panels. Any combination of streamline and contour front panels and canopies can be selected.

Now to go along with our Q1 Service Deli case, we have launched our self service (Q1-SS) companion case. This case is available in not only straight cases, but curved wedges. This new product will give any store that high end look in the service deli, cheese, or bakery departments.

Merchandising Flair - Stylish curves combined with sleek design elements create enhanced product visibility. Granite or solid surface design allows for an amazing merchandising display unlike other cases. Merchandising Capacity - 11" product height, and 35" product depth allows for tiered merchandising or high product volume. OLPHussmann will be participating in a big way at IDDBA – 2007. The focal display area at the show is the IDDBA “Show and Sell Center” featuring “Extreme Merchandising” concepts to help educate and inspire show attendees. Hussmann will be providing most of the equipment for the Show and Sell Center, including an operating Protocol unit and 20 working cases. These will be primarily specialty cases for deli, cheese, prepared foods and other specialty items.

IDDBA attendees are made up largely of supermarket merchandisers, executives and buyers, along with various others. The Expo and Show and Sell Merchandising Pavilion will be open for four to five hours during each day of the event.

24 of the top 25 supermarket chains had people attending IDDBA in 2006. Many of these attendees came to the show to learn about new merchandising trends and opportunities. In fact, one reasons listed by IDDBA for attending is to “photograph and videotape exciting new merchandising concepts in the Show and Sell Center Merchandising Pavilion.” This will be a great place see Hussmann tell their merchandising story.

The IDDBA seminar features a variety of well-known speakers. In 2007 these will include Ted Koppel, Madeleine Albright, Emmitt Smith, Tom Peters, Terry Bradshaw, Seth Godin, Harold Lloyd, Alton Brown, Harry Balzer and others.

Oct. 2, Hussmann launched its Always*Green program with a kick-off event at the company’s largest manufacturing facility in Bridgeton, MO. During this lunch celebration, held in a large tent on the parking lot, Hussmann provided information about its products that offer environmental benefits to customers, as well as internal processes for making environmental sustainability a strong part of Hussmann’s business culture. Representatives from Laclede Gas, Ameren UE, RideFinders, Crown Excel and Hussmann were on hand to offer suggestions..

AG1The Hussmann Always*Green program will be promoted at all Hussmann locations, and is focused on three areas:

First, Hussmann will be working to create a “culture of green” within the Hussmann organization. This will include promotion of ride sharing, recycling, energy saving and manufacturing practices that can help reduce emissions and waste. Hussmann will also be encouraging suppliers to use sustainable practices and materials whenever possible.

Second, Hussmann will work with its customers to help them achieve their sustainability objectives. This will include the broader application of Hussmann technologies that help reduce energy use and lower carbon dioxide and hydro fluorocarbon emissions.

Third, Hussmann will focus on development of new products, services and manufacturing processes that further reduce emissions and waste. By dedicating its efforts in these three areas Hussmann believes it can help create a brighter, more environmentally sustainable future for everyone.

Innovator doorHussmann’s revolutionary Innovator RIM Walk-In Door product line is expanding with the addition of a new size door, the 24” x 75” RIM Innovator I Walk-In Door for coolers & freezers. The new 24”x75” RIM door will join the existing Innovator RIM door sizes currently available:

The narrower, 24” wide RIM doors offer significant energy savings over traditional aluminum doors. They are a perfect solution for retailers wishing to increase the quantity of door openings in a line-up.

Hussmann’s Innovator Walk-In Cooler & Freezer Doors are a radically new approach to glass door merchandising. Unlike traditional aluminum doors, Innovator’s molded door design enables the complete elimination of anti-sweat heaters in the door’s perimeter, reducing doorframe anti-sweat heat transmitted into the cooler/freezer box.
