Sobeys supermarket in Coldlake, Alberta (Western Canada) recently purchased its first Isla case, and the store owner couldn’t be more pleased with the results! The Isla island merchandiser was installed near the deli department, displaying ready-to-eat meals, packaged salads and cut fruit.

“We love the shop-around accessibility of Isla,” said store owner Scott Squire. Although he knew Isla would attract attention, the tremendous boost in sales took him by surprise.
“We’ve seen over a 50% increase in sales of sushi, cut fruit and packaged salads,” Scott Squire said. “The huge turnover in these products was more than we’ve ever experienced before.” Isla merchandisers are exceeding expectations at Sobeys and at other supermarkets throughout North America. One of the unique features of Hussmann’s LifeLine Premier Series of reach-in cases is the dry shelving in the bump-out displays, which allows stores to merchandise complementary non-refrigerated products next to frozen items. Not only have we seen stores achieve increased frozen food sales with LifeLine cases, but now we have information on cross-merchandising success.
During the first six months of using LifeLine, LeBlanc’s new store in Hammond, LA, had tremendous cross-merchandising sales. Randy LeBlanc, one of the chain’s owners, reports ice cream toppings and cones merchandised next to premium ice cream showed a sales increase of between 22-28% compared to two similar LeBlanc’s stores without LifeLine cases.
Other cross-merchandised items that have sold well in LeBlanc’s LifeLine cases include creole seasonings next to frozen meals (“In Louisiana, we use this on everything,” says Randy); cooking oils next to frozen potatoes and barbeque sauce next to garlic bread.

By combining our engineering capabilities with the Hussmann and Trane portfolio of products, we recently helped Sprouts Farmers Markets reduce carbon footprint and energy consumption, leading to recognition from the U.S. EPA GreenChill organization. The GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce their emissions of ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas refrigerants.
Sprouts, which owns stores in California, Arizona, Colorado and Texas, recently received a New Partner Award from GreenChill. New partners pledge to go above and beyond regulatory requirements by measuring and tracking refrigerant emissions that affect climate change and the earth’s ozone layer, and then they set reduction targets for these emissions. Partners also agree to use only ozone-friendly alternatives in all new and remodeled stores.
“Sprouts Farmers Market is proving to consumers that they care about the earth’s ozone layer and climate system,” said Keilly Witman, GreenChill program manager.
Hussmann’s Value Development Team first approached Sprouts with a complete refrigeration and HVAC solution following Ingersoll Rand’s acquisition of Trane. The Hussmann team coordinated with Trane Commercial Systems’ engineering team to perform energy studies and analyses. The energy studies found that with Hussmann’s Protocol, Krack’s microchannel condenser and Trane’s packaged air conditioning systems, we could deliver significant energy and carbon footprint reduction. Since then, Sprouts has awarded Hussmann and Trane with 10 store projects.

Hussmann recently introduced a new distributed secondary system that’s more environmentally friendly than traditional secondary systems. Called Protochill, the new system requires less refrigerant charge and provides better energy efficiency and lower construction costs.
Protochill utilizes the Protocol HE platform in conjunction with an integrated pump and heat exchanger package for an innovative medium temperature application. This compact distributed system offers installation flexibility for a wide range of applications – from new stores to remodels.
A typical water-cooled Protochill can reduce refrigerant charge up to 60% over a central secondary system, and an air-cooled application can reduce charge up to 35%. Protochill also offers up to a 10% energy savings versus traditional secondary systems when properly applied. The savings are a result of proper load matching and pressure drop reduction due to the proximity of the units to the refrigerated cases and coolers.
Other advantages over traditional secondary systems include:

Hussmann will attract attention to its 1800-square-foot booth with a large logo sign hung from the ceiling that introduces this year’s theme: Inspiring Solutions. This theme will be applied to all five of the company’s customer values on display: Merchandising, Food Safety, Extended Shelf Life, Green and Life Cycle Value.

The Merchandising section of the booth will feature Excel, Elite, Impact Reach-In and Specialty cases, along with two Chill Chambers.

The Green area of our booth will tell Hussmann’s story of energy efficiency and sustainability through the use of signage, a new systems carbon footprint calculator and three new refrigeration products: Protocol SP, Krack Microchannel Condenser and a new refrigeration system to be unveiled at the show.
Food Safety and Shelf-Life Extension will be featured in one area, where we will be introducing the EMS Environment Management System. An actual EMS unit will be on display, and an animated video will illustrate how the product effectively kills bacteria on food and work surfaces. Signage will explain how EMS provides safer foods and cleaner stores, extends fresh food shelf life and eliminates odors. We will have a new brochure on EMS and how it applies to supermarkets and other food retailers.
The Life Cycle Value portion of the booth will describe how Hussmann customers can get greater value for their investment throughout the life of the equipment. A new promotion The display will focus on enhancing the value of equipment, installation, service and maintenance to help retailers increase profitability.

 As supermarkets strive to be more environmentally friendly and save energy through green technologies, Hussmann’s green products and services play a more important role. Recently, Hussmann helped two supermarkets achieve LEED certification, the US Green Building Council’s benchmark in the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and the certification process gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED recognizes performance in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
Briarpatch Co-op Natural Foods Community Market in Grass Valley, CA, used Hussmann’s green products in a number of areas to help it achieve LEED certification through better energy efficiency. The store’s refrigeration system consists of Protocol units piped to an evaporative condenser. Hussmann also provided and installed the HVAC system, which passes through the Protocols for air conditioning and heat reclaim. Water heat reclaim was also utilized at this store, along with Innovator doors on reach-ins and high-efficiency coils and fan motors on refrigerated cases.
Hussmann truly went above and beyond in helping an ACME (SuperValu) supermarket improve efficiency and achieve LEED certification in Concordville, PA. In addition to a Protocol refrigeration system, Innovator doors and LED lights on reach-ins and walk-in coolers, and energy efficient fan motors and coils in display cases, we customized D5XLEP dairy cases with the first installation of canopy LED lights and dimmable motion sensors. (LED lights on medium temp multi-deck case canopies and dimmable motion sensors will be available late third quarter 2008.)

Hussmann has announced two new self-contained mobile merchandisers that are available in five different model lengths. All models have the flexibility of multi-temperature capability, from freezer to refrigerator temperatures. They also feature swivel casters (front two locking) that allow mobility for placement anywhere in the store. Available in either flat top or solid top, both types feature solid white exterior panels for custom graphic decals.

Hussmann announces the availability of new rear loading doors on D6X ultra low front dairy cases, which enable store employees to stock shelves without disrupting shoppers. Bi-fold rear loading doors on the Hussmann cases can be connected to a large cooler, where employees can stock shelves from the rear, providing shoppers with an attractive wall of product without a merchandise stocker in sight.

Hussmann is leading the market with the introduction of a new generation of Always*Bright LED lights for shelves of multi-deck medium temperature display cases and for narrow footprint (RLN) Reach-Ins with Innovator Doors.
Both LED light systems were officially launched during the FMI Show in Las Vegas May 5-7 and generated tremendous customer interest.
The new LED light systems provide bright, even illumination of products with lower energy costs. Retailers can save up to 51% in light-related energy by using the Always*Bright LED system over T-8 fluorescent lights.
Hussmann is among the first in the industry to offer an LED lighting system for medium temperature multi-deck display cases. Due to the slim design of the LED light fixture, the light source is concealed under a tilted shelf. Always*Bright LED shelf lights are available in 3’ and 4’ lengths in the following color temperatures: 2900K, 3500K and 4100K.
The new LED system for narrow footprint Reach-Ins with Innovator I and Innovator II doors has been optimized specifically for narrow Reach-Ins to provide superior product illumination versus traditional T-8 fluorescents, as well as against competitive LED systems. The new LED lighting system for narrow Reach-Ins with Innovator doors is available in two color temperatures: 3500K and 4100K. The LED system for narrow Reach-Ins joins the current LED system for standard (RL) Reach-In cases launched in 2007. Whether you have standard (RL) or narrow footprint (RLN) Reach-In cases, Hussmann has designed a LED lighting system specifically for your merchandising requirements.
The new Always*Bright LED lights also work well for dimming or on/off operation using an occupancy sensor. They can be turned on and off in a cold environment with no warm-up time and no negative impact on lamp life.
Hussmann Always*Bright LED fixtures offer superior durability and extended lamp life (5-10 years), reducing the labor costs associated with replacing lamps. They are also backed by a four-year materials warranty on the LED light strips and a five-year materials warranty on the power supply.

Hussmann recently introduced a new member of the Protocol family of refrigeration systems. Called the SP (for Small Platform), the new three-compressor refrigeration system is designed for foodservice applications, supermarket remodels and convenience stores. The flexibility of the SP Protocol allows it to be mounted indoors on top of coolers or hung from the ceiling.
Like the other Protocol units, the SP Protocol is more energy efficient than traditional condensing units for similar applications. It has a reduced refrigerant charge and features 80% less leakage over parallel rack systems with similar capacities. Other advantages include:
- Less copper refrigerant piping and fewer braze joints
- Easier to service and maintain
- No machine room needed

Hussmann has released a new Door Anti-Sweat Heater (DASH) control for Innovator Door frames on Walk-In Coolers. This control conserves energy by reducing power consumption of the door glass anti-condensate heaters.
Most anti-sweat heaters in doors operate 100% of the time, regardless of conditions. The DASH control adjusts the heat needed according to store ambient conditions, making sure doors remain fog free while conserving energy.
The DASH sensor, installed in the bottom of the door frame assembly, ensures optimal energy savings by turning the heat on only when needed and turning it off when not needed. And unlike doors with unsightly externally mounted sensors, the DASH control is integrated into the frame.
All three DASH components – the control module, the sensor and interconnecting cable – are factory-installed in the frame assembly. The exact location and position of the sensor required for optimal performance is set at the factory. No additional field installation is necessary.
A reference table (click here) shows the percent of time the door heater will be on based on the relative humidity and store temperature. For a standard 75-degree/55% store, the door heat will be on 91% of the time (compared to 100% without the control). In addition to the energy savings from DASH, customers may receive rebates from local utility companies for using anti-sweat heater controls. Plus there is a five-year warranty on the control.
The patent-pending DASH control can now be ordered with Walk-In Cooler frames for 30” Innovator Door applications. The following kits are available:

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) recently conducted testing of Hussmann’s Always*Bright LED lighting system on Reach-in freezer cases. The system also included motion sensors and dimming power supplies designed to save energy by automatically dimming the lights when no one is near the freezer cases. In addition to monitoring energy savings, the SMUD team tracked sales data and interviewed over 100 shoppers to get their opinions. Study results showed the LED lighting/sensor system:
- Reduced lighting energy consumption by an impressive 68% (compared to T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts
- Reduced the low temperature refrigeration system energy consumption by 20%
- Was acceptable to the majority of surveyed shoppers

For Hussmann’s supermarket customers, this means the company will be able to more effectively assess and define needs; more rapidly develop solutions; and provide a smoother transition to engineering and manufacturing. Hussmann launched the new LTH-18 low temperature, one-door cassette refrigeration freezer during the October NACS show in Chicago. This is the first of four LTH models that will be launched in the coming year. The LTH-18 standard height (80.75”) one-door model will be followed by a 60” high one-door model (LTH-8s), a two-door model (LTH-45) and a three-door model (LTH-68).
All LTH models feature the new proprietary low temperature cassette refrigeration system that is only available from Hussmann. This revolutionary refrigeration system makes service and maintenance of the freezer quick and easy, minimizing service costs and refrigeration down time. It takes less than five minutes to remove and replace the entire refrigeration system, and no service call is required. Store employees merely unplug and slide out -- a replacement cassette can be slid in place, getting the store back in business in a matter of minutes.
The R-404A cassette refrigeration system includes the compressor, condenser, hot gas condensate pan and many of the components usually found inside the freezer display area, such as evaporator, evaporator fan motors, expansion valve and temperature control.
display area, the cassette system protects displayed product during defrost better than any other system on the market (since the defrost actually takes place outside of the refrigerated display compartment). Product is not exposed to excessive rise in temperature, and pulling the display compartment back down to operating temperatures is quicker. Displayed product lasts longer and case energy consumption is reduced.
Because all of the refrigeration components are located in the cassette underneath the case, 100% of the case interior is available for product display. This gives stores more interior space than any competitive unit to merchandise on the four adjustable wire racks. Each rack has a built-in 1-1/2” high product stop and is 24-1/2” wide X 22” deep. The bottom metal deck is also built to merchandise product.
The LTH pairs up nicely with the BCH medium temperature cassette product line, and both can offer customers exceptional display and service value at competitive prices. IDDBA attendees are made up largely of supermarket merchandisers, executives and buyers, along with various others. The Expo and Show and Sell Merchandising Pavilion will be open for four to five hours during each day of the event.
24 of the top 25 supermarket chains had people attending IDDBA in 2006. Many of these attendees came to the show to learn about new merchandising trends and opportunities. We are proud to announce the availability of the vertical series of Elite specialty service merchandisers. The ESBDVS, ESGMVS, and E2V cases offer the same Elite styling and proven Impact performance our customers expect with Impact Elite, now with nearly vertical glass. The new models offer customers increased merchandising capacity and improved product visibility in meat, deli, and seafood service cases, which line up beautifully with a complementary multi-deck self-service case for a consistent look in the department.
Continued Merchandising Excellence
With the ESBDVS, ESGMVS, and E2V cases, customers can create an endless variety of unique merchandising concepts tailored to specific service opportunities. The straight, non-glare glass offers dynamic merchandising with excellent visibility.
These aesthetically advanced, high performance straight glass models are ideal for high profit, service products. Large rear doors and lift up front glass make these cases extremely easy to use. The new design is available in blower and gravity service case models.
The standard overall height of 52” is maintained while the internal capacity is increased.
The depth of the top of the cases has increased from 8” to over 19”, providing an extra-deep display area in addition to increased merchandising capacity.

Hussmann’s new Ultra Low Front Dairy Case creates a spectacular “wall of product” in any supermarket. The lower front height of the case has been dropped by over 6 inches, from what was 19 ¼” on a standard low front dairy, to 12 ¾” on the new Ultra Low Front, creating 10% greater visibility of facings in the same footprint.
The lower front height in the Ultra Low Front Dairy is virtually even with the bottom deck, so product facings are not partially “hidden” by the front. Every product facing in the Ultra Low Front model is now fully visible from top to bottom.
Capacity in the new case has also been increased by 2” from top to bottom. With this increase, we have added outlets to accommodate one additional row of lighted shelving, giving you greater capacity and display flexibility. Heavy-duty steel display pans are standard on the bottom deck.
The new Ultra Low Front Dairy Case is available in two height options. The D5X-ULEP has a traditional overall height of 81 ¾”. The extra tall D6X-ULEP stands 87 ¾” tall. Either height creates a stunning visual display that highlights every product. Both models are available in either Contour or Streamline styling.
The Ultra Low Front Dairy can merchandise a variety of products. It is excellent for dairy, deli, beverage and even produce applications. As with all Impact Excel models, refrigeration performance, energy efficiency and temperature stability are all excellent.

Always Working to Protect the Environment
Oct. 2, Hussmann launched its Always*Green program with a kick-off event at the company’s largest manufacturing facility in Bridgeton, MO. During this lunch celebration, held in a large tent on the parking lot, Hussmann provided information about its products that offer environmental benefits to customers, as well as internal processes for making environmental sustainability a strong part of Hussmann’s business culture. Representatives from Laclede Gas, Ameren UE, RideFinders, Crown Excel and Hussmann were on hand to offer suggestions..
The Hussmann Always*Green program will be promoted at all Hussmann locations, and is focused on three areas:
First, Hussmann will be working to create a “culture of green” within the Hussmann organization. This will include promotion of ride sharing, recycling, energy saving and manufacturing practices that can help reduce emissions and waste. Hussmann will also be encouraging suppliers to use sustainable practices and materials whenever possible.
Second, Hussmann will work with its customers to help them achieve their sustainability objectives. This will include the broader application of Hussmann technologies that help reduce energy use and lower carbon dioxide and hydro fluorocarbon emissions.
Third, Hussmann will focus on development of new products, services and manufacturing processes that further reduce emissions and waste. By dedicating its efforts in these three areas Hussmann believes it can help create a brighter, more environmentally sustainable future for everyone.
