A2Ls are a new classification of EPA- approved HydroFluoroOlefin (HFO) refrigerant blends used for automotive, residential, commercial air-conditioning, and commercial refrigeration.  There are several types of A2Ls used for refrigeration that meet the new federal and state environmental regulations—the most common for commercial refrigeration are R-454C and R-454A.

Why use A2L Refrigeration?

  • Environmentally Friendly: Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) - typically less than 300 with options below 150
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meet current federal and state refrigerant regulations
  • Equipment Design: Systems that use A2Ls have additional features to significantly reduce the risk in the event of a refrigerant leak.
  • Serviceability: Technician transition from HFC to A2L systems will be smooth as most system designs, tools, and components are equivalent to what is used today
  • Ideal for New and Remodeled Stores: There are new rules in ASHRAE Standard 15 for applying A2Ls in refrigeration systems, but Hussmann has an excellent understanding of the safety standards and building codes and can provide solutions and guidance on designing A2L systems.

Note: currently, the EPA’s SNAP rules do not allow A2Ls to be retrofitted into existing systems, so all equipment must be new.  This could change in the future.  However, when remodeling stores, existing line sets can be leveraged with no need for heavy duty copper.

How do A2L refrigerants fit in with Hussmann’s Evolve Technology Offering?

A2Ls, CO2, and R-290 are the three current and future low-GWP refrigerant technologies Hussmann uses to meet market needs that fall under the Evolve Technologies umbrella.

A2Ls compared to existing HFC refrigerants are similar in required system complexity, system performance, and operating pressures. A2Ls can be used in a variety of applications including self-contained units, remote-condensing systems, either centralized or distributed, and hybrid display cases.  A2L refrigerants are especially well-suited for high ambient environments where their COP is like currently used HFCs.

Hussmann is creating a comprehensive portfolio of A2L solutions by 2026 to meet the ever changing retail and regulatory needs.
