Hussmann's New Infrared Technology

With SafeSense, Hussmann will help reduce food waste for retailers. Learn more here about how measurements of food temperature will increase your profit and meet your environmental goals.

What is SafeSense?

SafeSense is an infrared sensor that measures the temperature of the food products inside of open-air case. Typically, these types of products are perishable items such as meat, eggs, yogurt, cheese, and more. Hussmann is working to combat food waste by helping grocery retailers meet their food waste initiatives.

The sensor itself is designed to fit any type of rail or shelf and can be installed on any medium-temperature display case. With Hussmann's newly developed software, managers will receive alerts through an app/website when product temperature goes beyond the desired range. Keep your products safe and your customers happy with the implementation of SafeSense!

What is infrared and why is it a good solution?

Infrared (IR) is a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves. It is invisible to the human eye and is associated with heat, making it useful for thermal imaging and temperature sensing. Infrared radiation offers unique advantages in terms of visibility, safety, and versatility, making it a valuable solution in various technological and scientific applications.

  1. Temperature Monitoring: continuously monitor the temperature of refrigerated products, ensuring they stay within safe limits. IR also allows for temperature checks without touching the products, reducing contamination risk.
  2. Energy Efficiency: helps optimize cooling systems by providing accurate temperature data, leading to more efficient energy use.
  3. Spoilage Detection: detects temperature variations that might indicate spoilage or equipment malfunctions, helping maintain product quality.

Become a leader in technological change and help save the environment along the way. Food waste continues to be a growing issue, invest in the future of the grocery industry. Learn more about the positive impacts SafeSense will have on grocers nationwide below!

Food Waste in the Grocery Retail Industry

According to Business DIT, "40% of total food waste is generated at the retail level, which includes grocery stores, restaurants, and food service companies" and the US Department of Agriculture estimates a 31% food loss at the retail/consumer level.

Areas SafeSense Will Improve for Retailers

Decrease food waste contributions by implementing SafeSense with medium-temperature perishable foods!

“When produce is exposed to greater temperature fluctuations like those seen during the summer months, the percentage of wasted food increases for retailers.”
